"I feel so insecure ..... about my braces!" Part 1

Have you ever felt insecure before? Sometimes it's because of the way people talk about you but also the way people look at you can make you feel insecure. If one friend of yours says ugly words about your new shirt, would you never wear it again, just because that person said so.. ? We all care a lot what other people say and that can make us feel damn insecure. Sometimes we just feel insecure about ourselves because of our new hairstyle or clothes or even wearing braces can make us feel insecure, because you think it's ugly. Yes, I also felt insecure before, plenty of times!!!

My story
Last year I decided to wear braces (which is quite late, since I'm 22 already lol), that's right it was my own choice to wear it just because I want to have straight teeth and I'm sure that I will be happy with it after the process. However, on the first day when I wore the braces, I automatically cried because it was so fugly x___x". I definitely felt insecure at the beginning. I didn't even want to talk to friends at first because it was so ugly xD I mean... it doesn't look attractive at all right?! Also, after I had my braces, I didn't want to show my teeth on photos XD, people could only see me smiling since then.

But I got used to my braces after 3 months or so and I have been wearing braces for longer than a year now. I realized that it's actually a very normal thing to wear it. There are even people who are 30 years or older who are wearing braces and almost everybody had it when they were young.. so what's the big deal? Why should a brace face like me feel insecure about it? Yes, I got my confidence back after a couple of months xD.

My question to you:
Have you ever worn braces? Have you ever felt insecure before?

  1. Oh I've worn braces for years! Started with some futuristic device to widen my mouth - my head's too small, haha -, then operation to move my upper right canine tooth, then regular braces like the ones you have. All in all I spent five years of my life wearing braces. I don't regret it, I gotst me some reaaally nice teeth nows! ^^ You'll be really happy when they come off and you see your teeth lined up all nicely!

  2. back in the states almost everyone had braces at some point, usually in the early teens. i had them too, and yes they were unattractive and painful - i even had to get 4 teeth removed before getting braces - but the end result is going to last for the rest of my life, compared to 2 years of having to put up with braces. (:

in some cases it might even be better to get braces when you're a little older anyway, since all your teeth have had a chance to grow and settle in. ^^

  3. I had braces for a VERY long time. I started when i was 10/11 with a big boxerlike thing to set my loverjaw in its normal place(nowadays they do it with surgery). My teeth were a ''problemcase''. I had a 10mm between my front teeth and I had EVERY brace and weird thing they could think off back then. The boxerlike thing, buttons, brackets, the headpiece, the neckpiece, and so on. I also had to remove my wisdom teeth at the hospital when I was 15. So yeah, I know how it feels, and trust me, the result will be very nice. ;)

  4. I've been lucky since I've never had to have braces but I've definitely felt insecure before (can anyone honestly say they haven't before?!). I've had horrible skin issues and I'm still working on getting my skin perfect but it looks so good now in comparison to just a year ago. I'm really happy about it. I'm sure you'll LOVE the results of the braces! :P

  5. Goed artikel :) Was ook wel een beetje een stap voor mij om in de eerste klas HAVO zomaar met een buitenboord beugel aan te komen lopen (overdag in mn nek, dat wel!)

  6. Aww I'm glad you were able to get your confidence back! :D I had braces when I was 14-16, and the majority of my friends had them too so it was completely accepted. I wasn't fussed at all. Our orthodontists would ask us what colour we wanted, and if it was the xmas season some girls went for green and red! It looked pretty awful but we got through it with straight teeth on the other side!

At least the ones you got are silver! I kept going for navy blue. So if you didn't look carefully it looked like I had a mouth of rotting black teeth!!!!! Hahaha.....But I know what you mean though. I haven't got any photo evidence of my braces cos I never smiled with my mouth open. I still don't now, but that's cos I have a dimple that appears under my eye if I do! Hahaha...So I suppose I'm insecure about that xD

  7. I had braces back in highschool :P I was... 15 years, 16?
It didn't made me insecure, infact it was kind of cool wearing braces!

  9. I think your braces look cute! & I never had braces since my teeth were fairly OK. Plus I'm too cheap to make it perfect. :D

  12. i'm 25  and i really want to get braces, but i always think i'm too old to get them because of the same reasons! i'm very sensitive and peoples words affect me a lot. i wish i got them when i was a lot younger

  13. I had braces when I was 15 but I also happened to be the only girl in the entire school to have them. I felt really insecure with braces because everyone keep staring at my teeth. They called me names which really made me more insecure. I've never had a single photo of myself wearing braces.
I only got back my confidence when I took off my braces 1 and a half years later.
I've been smiling ever since. :D

  14. I can definitely relate with you on this topic Elisa. I had a gap between my two front teeth (think Madonna) all my life, up until my 2nd year of college. I tried to hide it from everyone and rarely smiled. When I was about 20, I finally decided that enough was enough. I didn't want visible braces, so I researched and asked around about Invisalign, but it was way out of my budget. I finally came across an ortho who suggested lingual braces that go behind your teeth. I had them in for about 6 months and my gap was closed. I'm not completely satisfied with my smile as I only got the top row of teeth straightened, but I feel a lot more confident than I did before. I think it's great that you decided to get yours done, because like you said, it's never too late to get braces. It's good to embrace your imperfections if you're comfortable with them, but if they bother you so much to the point where you are insecure about yourself, there is nothing wrong with getting work done to fix it (except things like plastic surgery, which I'm against). It might be hard getting used to them now, but at least you can look forward to the day they come off :)

  15. I'm so glad you posted this! When I was younger I wore the removable braces (not sure how they are called)? But they were super uncomfortable and I didn't wear them regularly, oh how sorry I am that I didn't! Now I want to put braces, because believe me, braces are better looking than crooked teeth! I am still unsure, or rather, I want to but I'm 19 and it feels like I'm late, but as you said age doesn't matter! Currently saving money to get them✌Now I don't really smile with "open mouth" I never show my teeth, I don't like them and I want to straighten them as soon as possible! Once I get braces, I'll feel like my life has become better.

When I see someone with braces I don't think "How ugly" or something like that, I truly admire them, people who make you feel insecure about those things, don't deserve to stand on the same ground as you.

I had a friend that once told me that I look bad in a pair of jeans I spend so much money on, and I never wore it again. I don't know why, usually those things don't get to me, but that pair of jeans never saw the light again. I'm working my way to wearing them again! And you look absolutely adorable on that picture!

  16. Wow, you've been through a lot ! 5 years? wow! that's really a long period. However, i'm sure that you're super happy with your straight teeth now :D

  17. yeah, I agree that its better to take braces when you're a bit older.. and yes, the end result is going to last forever, that's the mean reason why everybody takes braces ^^

  18. Ik heb wel geluk gehad, dat ik geen buitenboord beugel nodig had.. pff.. ik zou dat niet willen rond me 20e =/

    ReplyDelete
  19. whoa, i did hear that it was more painful back in the days.. but i'm sure that you're very happy with it now :D

    ReplyDelete
  20. yeah, back in the days when i was 14 or something, many ppl in school had braces as well. And it was COOL to have a bunch of colors on your braces xD some ppl had some rainbow colors haha.. ahhh, i think i will show my teeth a bit more when my braces are out xD

    ReplyDelete

  23. hahaha, really?!?! fashion accessory xD? that's good to hear hahah

    ReplyDelete
  24. yes, i totally agree with you.. the words of ppl affects me a lot (A LOT!).. but you can ask your orthodontist how long it will take, if you want it.. maybe its just 6 months? I would take it if its 6 months xD.

    ReplyDelete
  25. yeah, i know how you feel.. it sucks to get bullied by ppl and if ppl call you like braceface or something =.=" ugh.. but great to hear that you're happy with the end result. :D

    ReplyDelete
  26. YES, i'm sure that you will happy with your braces and especially with the end result ^^! I did hear that the removable braces are irritating and painful.. but you can ask your orthodontist if there is an other alternative for you :)

I was totally like you when i was young. The words from other ppl will totally affect me.. It affects my mood, i will think about the words all the time.. it just makes you feel insecure.. But once you get older or when you see the "light" or whatever you call it.. you will get more confidence and you just need to have confidence in what you're wearing. It's YOUR STYLE! and hey, everybody has its own taste, some ppl like it, some don't.. Don't feel too bad about it and find your confidence back! Just wear it if you want to.

  27. I heard that invisalign is very expensive. (much more expensive than the regular ones). I only knew about it recently after seeing it on someones blog or something.. I would totally get it if i had the money for it x_x. I never heard about Lingual braces before, but i regret that i didn't take that hahaha.. its barely visible o.o!!! why didn't you wear it longer to straighten all of your teeth then..?

Anyways, its great to hear that you have your confidence back after the 6 months :).

    ReplyDelete
  28. Haha I would have, but I only got the linguals to get the gap closed. My parents paid for it, so they didn't think it was necessary to get them for the bottom row since those are pretty even. If I had a choice I would have gotten them for both! :(

    ReplyDelete
  29. ohh, yeah my parents would say the exact same words i think.. i wasn't allowed to take braces from my parents when i was young =.=" because they said it was pretty straight already.. but i wanted to have it completely straight, so i just paid it myself when i was a bit older :).

  30. im 13 in 7th grade...i have braces... there fugly, trust me.
i smile with my mouth closed, i cover my mouth when i laugh, and i talk with my mouth open as little as possible.
i will NEVER show my braces in a picture because i dont want people to be able to pull that picture out and make fun of me for it.

    ReplyDelete
  31. yeah i know how you feel.. it really makes you insecure.. but think about the good side.. your teeth will be super straight afterwards :D and then you can smile as bright as you want! you will really love the results, but you just have to bare with all those criticism at school ..  x. good luck dear!
